Your Alaska fishing trip is booked, the charter is reserved and your plane ticket is ready. You’ve been dreaming of trophy-sized fish, and your arms are just twitching to get out on the water. Alaska Fly Fishing – All About Alaskan King Crab Season

Most Alaskan seafood is available frozen all-year round, however the Alaskan king crab season corresponds to when Alaskan king crab is actually harvested. The most popular harvesting months are between October and January. The actual season, when crabbers are allowed to catch crabs, can last as little as four days, but can also range from one week to two weeks. Once harvested, it takes about one week to move the crabs from the Bering Sea to local markets.

Harvesting Alaskan king crab is an incredibly difficult job, combining a short season, violent and unpredictable waters, 20 hours shifts, and loads of up to a ton. Until recently the crabbing industry worked under a derby style season, but after the 2005 season transitioned to a quota system. The quota system, or rationalization, was a response to the dangers of having a very short season with many boats all vying and competing for crabs. The quota system is to encourage a more relaxed work pace, though many smaller boats, with smaller quotas, could no longer compete with larger boats and larger quotas.

Catches are also down from previous years, and due to an influx of foreign caught crab, higher prices may be on the horizon. However, when considering the dangers of the Alaskan king crab season, how brief a season it really is, any nominal rise of prices is worth the sweet meat of such a laborious effort.

As mentioned in recent years there has been a flood of foreign caught crab, but for consumers interested in sustainability, it should be noted that foreign crab is often caught without much regulation. When thinking of a natural, sustainable, and fresh choice for crab, look no further than your neighbor to the north, and buy Alaskan King Crab, and to get it freshest, buy it close to the end of the Alaskan king crab season.

Alaska backpacking: Chilkoot Pass vs Denali National Park?

Some backpacking friends of mine are considering a 5-7 backpacking trip in Alaska next summer and are debating between doing the historic Chilkoot Pass out of Skagway or something in Denali National Park.

Does anybody who has backpacked (or extensively hiked) one (or hopefully both) of these areas have any preferences in terms of scenic beauty, logistics, solitude, variety of features, historic sites, and decent food/lodging/attractions nearby (for a couple of 'tourist' days when we get out)?

Alaska Halibut Fishing Charters

Every wanted to fish for the hell of it? Alaska halibut fishing charters are the way to go.

The halibut is a strange fish. There is no getting around that. It is a close relative of the flounder, and like that fish, has this thing with its eyes not being in the right place. It usually weighs around 25-30 pounds when it is an adult, but it can grow much larger. Some have been caught that weigh up to 600 pounds. They are fighters. They do not jump high in the air like many other ocean monsters. They are more likely to sit near the bottom and stubbornly pull back as hard as the fisherman is reeling in.

Their fighting mean streak does not end when they get on the boat. In fact, bigger halibut are so feisty that the charter captains often shoot them when they get to the surface to protect the passengers from harm. Once you have pulled a 100 pound halibut up from the ocean depths, you will never have to prove your strength and endurance again in any other way.

The prime fishery for halibut is the cold waters of the North Pacific Ocean. Alaska halibut fishing charters leave from ports all along the coast during the warm season. Like most fishing charters all over the world, the halibut charter boats will provide you with everything you need to catch the fish. They tell you to bring refreshment and snacks, but they provide the heavy tackle and bait needed to catch the halibut.

They also remind you to bring warm clothing. This is still Alaska and even in the summer, it is likely to be chilly out on the water. There are many different sized boats and the size that is best for you is determined by the size of your party. As with most charters, it is highly recommended to make reservations in advance. The best thing about halibut is the fun and adventure of catching them, but the second best thing is eating them. It is a close second, too. Make sure you do not miss that part of it.

Crab fishing in Alaska is a great experience. But before you go crabbing, you’ll need to know some details about Alaska’s crab species. Having this knowledge will enhance your fishing experience and when you know how to identify them, you’ll have an easier time fishing for crabs. Read on to find out more about tanner, king and dungeness crabs.

Tanner Crabs

Known by two names, tanner crabs or snow crabs are a popular crab species in Alaska. You probably recognize snow crabs as the ones with the tasty red legs. These crabs have a semi-transparent shell with a small abdominal flap. Like other Alaskan crabs, tanners have five sets of pointy legs including one set with pincers. Smaller than king crabs, tanners typically range from a to 4 pounds in weight.

Many types of fish feed on tanner crabs and of course, humans enjoy them too. Their fish predators include bottomfish (like pollack or cod), oily fish (like herring.)

King Crabs

Also known as stone crabs, king crabs are the most sought after crabs in Alaska. The king crab population consists of three different species. The three types of kings are red, blue and golden crabs. All three species are prevalent in Alaska’s waters.

King crabs are identified by spiny shells, five distinct pairs of legs and fan shaped tails that curl under the back part of their shells. The first four legs on both sides are visible, but the fifth pair is tucked under their back shell. King crabs also have front pincers, of which the right pincer is slightly larger than the left. The large size of kings also sets them apart from other types of crabs. These monster crustaceans can reach weights of over 20 pounds.

Like humans, many organisms enjoy dining on king crabs. Major predators include cod, octopus, otters, other king crabs and Alaskan halibut In fact, there have been cases of fishermen finding 10 or more king crabs in a halibut’s belly.

Dungeness Crabs

These crabs are characterized by wide oval shaped bodies enclosed in a hard semi-transparent shells. Like king and tanner crabs, dungeness have five sets of legs with one set containing pincers. You can tell the difference between dungeness crabs and other species because they have small short legs and they lack a spiny shell. Dungeness crabs are around the same size as tanners and not as large as kings. Mature adults generally weigh about 2 to 3 pounds and are over 6 inches long.

Major predators include dogfish, octopus, otters and other crabs (including those of the same species.) At the larvae stage, crabs are food to fish like salmon.

Now that you know the distinguishing features of Alaska’s crab species, you can easily tell them apart from one another. Fishing for crabs can be a lot of fun and a nice change from rod and reel once in a while. Plus, nothing makes a better meal than fresh steamed crabs. Happy Fishing!

Alaska is home to the biggest sport caught King Salmon ever. Weighing in at 97 lbs. 4 oz., this magnificent specimen taken from the Kenai River is what Alaska salmon fishing dreams are made of. For this reason, anglers from far and wide are lured to Alaska in hopes of bringing home their own fishing legends.

The frigid, crystal clear waters of the Kenai River are home to numerous species of trophy fish including salmon, Rainbow Trout and Char. Over the last several years it has become increasingly obvious that seafood should be a major pillar of any person’s diet, as seafood products are rich in quality proteins and omega fatty acids that do so much to maintain our health. Many people across the country seem to be heeding these recommendations made on behalf of nutritionists and health journals, as more and more consumers are choosing to buy seafood products instead of relying so heavily on beef and other meats to grace the dinner table. However, given the rising demand for seafood, it is important to make sure that a solution for sustainable seafood is being sought and applied.

Though this is surely not the case in many areas of open ocean, the fisheries of Alaska have gone to great lengths to make this a reality. With plenty of prodding from the state government, which has taken very seriously the task of managing and controlling stocks and the pristine nature of marine ecosystems in Alaska since it became a state in 1959, there has been enough of a concerted effort from all sectors to implement a solution for sustainable seafood. Using a variety of methods, such as putting in place a smart quota system and giving scientists real control over managing resources during the fishing season to prevent over exploitation, there has been a wealth of positive results that confirm the success of the initiatives put in place.

In fact, when Alaska became a state in the late 1950s, the annual salmon yields were only around 20 million fish in total, whereas today between 100 and 200 million salmon are caught per season-a major growth that attests to efficient stock management practices. When salmon runs are low, biologists are given real control over fishing rights, and access can be completely shut off to help protect long term sustainability; conversely, during periods of surplus it is possible to take advantage of the bounty, though in a responsible manner. Together, the many control mechanisms have proven to be the most effective solution for sustainable seafood in the country, and surely throughout the world.

Developed mainly for salmon and trout, fly fishing is a special angling method whose origins are lost in the mist of time. Initially, real flies and worms were used as baits, bur as time passed and plastic and rubber were invented, artificial flies replaced the real ones. La Rioja, Spain

Sunny beaches perhaps, wine and friendly people maybe, but not in a million years would you think about fly-fishing. Well, think again, because in La Rioja, a small town in northern Spain, is the perfect spot for trout fishing. The two wild rivers that surround La Rioja, (Iregua and Najerilla) are perfect for fly-fishing. Big trout, enjoying life in the fertile water, steep valleys and tall mountains, is exactly what you will find in La Rioja. The most popular bait used by the locals fishing on the slower streams, is the Damsel Fly, while on the faster section of the river, the caddis rules. Artificial baits are used as well. But there is more to this place than the scenery. The people are the element that gives the real value to the spot. Besides, they are really experienced fishermen, so you could learn a thing or two from them. Therefore, if you should decide to go fly-fishing to Spain, this is exactly where you should book a ticket

The Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec
This wonderful place is located at about 350km eastwards from the mainland of Canada. Because of the surrounding mountains, that rise up to 1200m, and the gulf called “Baie des Chaleurs” ( “The Gulf of Heat”), the scenery here is breath-taking. The rivers here are said to have the clearest water in the world. Just check this with your own eyes, and you will have no doubt. Fishing in Gaspe will definitely be an experience you will never forget. For instance, the water is so clear, that you can see the salmon as it nears your fly, and the majestic dance it performs around it. This is a great place for out-door camping as well.

i have not went fishing since i was a kid but found out they will be stocking the lake down the street with them so…

what do i do-i have a pole with i think 8# test, orange power bait, some salmon eggs or something and #10 hooks i also have hooks just a hair bigger then the #10 hooks a few sinkers and a bober.. is this good enough? if so the power bait says it floats so i wouldn't use the bobber would i?

Alaska Fishing is an experience that is exciting and at the same time adventurous. One of the most important questions that are asked is as to how you should dress for an Alaskan adventure. The climate of this place is not very cooperative and this is why you need to equip your body with the right kind of attire. One word that best describes your Alaska Fishing clothing is ‘old’. Fishing On Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch lying on the Highland Boundary Fault. It has the largest surface area of any lock in the United Kingdom. Stretching 39km in length and 8km at its widest point, Loch Lomond possibly hosts the largest variety of fish in Scotland. Salmon and sea trout return into the Southern reaches of the loch from the River Leven, whilst brown and rainbow trout, roach, perch, pike, chub and dace offer every angler a different catch every time!

The River Leven is Scotland’s premier salmon and sea trout fishery. At six miles long, it’s not a large river but every fish has to go through the Leven in order to get to the Loch and the spawning rivers; this is the key to its success. Fly fishing is the most popular method and between 11th February and 31st October, anglers are treated to a wealth of salmon and sea trout. Although you’ll need to wait until the last week in March before seeing a decent run of spring salmon.

The River Endrick is the prime spawning river of the Lomond system. Anglers are urged to return all coloured fish to the river to ensure activity for future years. The river is well looked after by the volunteers of the River Endrick Working Group. Overhanging trees are carefully pruned back each year allowing the anglers space to cast their fly. Between the months of July and October are when great fishing can be found. If you find yourself on the water after it has risen and starting to fall, the river can be prolific and even complete beginners can land that special catch.

The River Fruin, located on the west of the Loch, is another main river. It has developed a reputation for providing excellent salmon and sea trout. Fly fishing is the only method on this river and many anglers will tell you that being in the right place at the right time is vital for success.

If you’re venturing out onto the waters, you might want to try some of these Lures and Flies. Trolled lures do well in the early part of the season. During the summer months, better success may be found with patterns such as Mallard and yellow, Invicta and Big Daddy Longlegs.

Permits are required for Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout so make sure you have one before making that first cast.

Sockeye Salmon will be around the middle of July, followed by Rainbow Trout the later part of July through the middle of September. The season wraps up with Silver Salmon mid-August.

We began our July fishing adventures on a DeHavilland Beaver float plane with pilot and 4 passengers plus our gear for a day fishing at Big River Lakes. Light layers and neoprene chest waders were all the gear that was needed.

We left Lake Hood in Anchorage about 9 a.m. heading across Cook Inlet to Lake Clark National Park west of Redoubt Bay and arrived at our destination around 10:30 a.m.

The flight was easy and enjoyable with sunny skies, taking in the scenery of the Aleutian Range as we flew closer. We arrived and transferred our gear to a flat bottom aluminum boat and the pilot/guide took us across the lake to fish on the west shore beside the stream. The planes are parked on muskeg, much too soggy for fishing so the pilots do double duty and run the boats as well.

Big River Lakes is a series of interconnected lakes that are a popular fly-out fishing spot. There were at least 3 other airplanes there the day we went out. A nearby lodge is well suited for bear viewing and we shared the lake with many other boats.

Soon after we arrived a 400 pound black bear come in to the stream feeding from the lake and he was there maybe 5 minutes when he suddenly took off when a 3-4 year old, 800-pound boar brown bear showed up. The brown bear fished for about 30-40 minutes while we stayed on shore well away from him. Though the bear was calm and showed no aggression to us, everyone stayed on the boats and gave him plenty of respect allowing him access to his fishing hole. He wandered off down the bank of the lake and 30-40 minutes later a sow with 3 cubs showed up. The sow was teaching the cubs how to fish, but the cubs were more interested in simply playing in the lake and checking out the fishermen. The sow paid no attention to the humans gathered and seemed to have no interest in our presence.

After they ate their fill, they proceeded down the bank on the south side of the lake, leaving the peaceful lakes once more to the fishermen. As she disappeared, the male brown bear began to swim across the lake from the north bank to the south, a distance of about 500 yards. As he got to the south shore and went into the woods, there was a loud ruckus and we assumed the sow had a confrontation with the male who was chased off, though he was nearly 300 pounds more than the sow. Shortly the male emerged from the south shore and swam back toward the north shore.

Unconcerned about the antics of the local bear population, we continue our quest for the Red Salmon we had come to fish. We stayed on the lakes about 5 hours and everyone caught their limit, catching and releasing fish until we were ready to head back to Anchorage. With no rain, mild temperatures, and no mosquitoes, we had a wonderful day fishing.

All About Heritage Fishing

A small rivulet connecting Annie Battle Lake to another of the park lakes is waist immersed with a dirty floor, providing brilliant wading areas for bass fishing.

The Lave Net Fishery at Blackrock on the Severn Estuary in Wales is the last of its kind in Wales and has also been designated as a heritage fishery. Treacherous tidal waters averaging speeds of 7-8 knots have witnessed generations of fishers throw along this fishing style. Less than a dozen lave net the Welsh government issued fishing licenses each year, with all belong with a citizen association keen to preserving this exclusive method of salmon fishing. The only noticeable difference between current and historic lave netters are that they now sport waders as opposite to animal skins. The lave net itself, a Y-shaped form constructed of lumber and a hand-made net, remainder unchanged. Anglers wade into the river and “cringe,” waiting at the salmon to tactic him, or timepiece for the telltale salmon splashes announcing their location. The fisher can then net the fish before they supervise to deeper water. This kind of fishing is restricted by law and by the tides. Anglers have about 1.5 hours before low surge to procedure their vessel when conditions are calm. Their data of the tides and of the spot, normal from the generation before, serves as their lead.

Kjaerra Laxefiske on the Kjaerrafossen River near Helgeland, Norway dates back to 1388. Ownership of the two heritage fisheries here is distinct by the “markebol,” a medieval troop of measurement.
